Sanna celebrates with his teammates |
The Montreal
Impact of Sanna Nyassi came back twice on Wednesday night at BC Place, winning
the Voyageurs Cup through a 2-2 draw with Kekuta Manneh’s Vancouver Whitecaps,
which ensured an aggregate Amway Canadian championship victory on away goals.
Sanna
was an unused sub for the victorious Impact as was Kekuta for the disappointed
Whitecaps.
With
the first leg between the two sides finishing goalless, the Impact won the
Voyageurs Cup on away goals, giving Montreal its eighth Cup title and first
since 2008 and leaving the Whitecaps still empty-handed in the competition.
The
triumph will also see the Impact qualify for the CONCACAF Champions League,
which kicks off in August.
Sanna’s
Impact will find out who their opponents in the group stage of the CONCACAF
Champions League will be on Monday 3rd June at the draw in Miami, Florida.
On
its first participation in the CONCACAF Champions League in 2008/2009, Montreal
Impact had reached the quarter-final against Santos Laguna of Mexico.
There’s
little time to savour Cup success, however, because Sanna’s Impact heads
directly to Kansas City today in preparation for Saturday’s fixture against Sporting
Kansas City for their 12th regular season game in MLS while Manneh’s Whitecaps
travel to New York to face New York Red Bulls.
