Aziz Corr Nyang moves to Malta |
After
seven months without a club, Gambia international Aziz Corr Nyang has finally
found a new home after spending more than a decade in Sweden.
Aziz Corr will be adding up to Valletta’s foreigners’
line-up for the new season after agreeing terms with the Maltese Premier League
club.
A deal was suppose to be finalized for the Gambian forward
in India as this blog last
month revealed that Kolkata-based side Mohun Bagan Athletic Club planned on
making him their final foreign acquisition before the start of the 2013/2014
I-League season, but the club cooled down their interest after been hit hard by
financial turmoil thus allowing the 28-year-old attacker to start a trial with
Mark Miller’s squad just after the Citizens’ elimination from the UEFA Europa
League qualifiers to Belarusian Premier League side FC Minsk last month.
However, with Valletta having no warm-up matches on schedule
where Miller could properly assess Aziz Corr as a trialist in action, he was
granted permission to play for Floriana in the semi-finals of the pre-season
tournament AME Cup.
Aziz Corr lived up to his billing as he produced an impressive
display, also netting a goal for the Greens in their 2-0 win over Matthew Mendy’s
Balzan at the Sirens Ground last Thursday. His fine showing, albeit with the
colours of City’s neighbouring rivals, seems to have convinced Valletta to move
quickly and offer him a contract.
The 6ft 1in Gambian, who has been without a club for seven
months after quitting promoted Swedish Allsvenskan side IF Brommapojkarna in
January, has already agreed terms with Valletta and is expected to put pen to
paper on a one-year contract this week.
Aziz Corr played 12 games in the 2011/2012 season without
finding the back of the net and his last game for Brommapojkarna came back in
September 2012 in the team’s 1-0 loss to Ljungskile.
He will join fellow countryman Hamza Barry, who joined the 21-timeMaltese Premier League champions last month from local side Gambia PortsAuthority.
