Former Gambia U-20 striker Kabba-Modou Cham has signed a two-year contract with Scottish Championship [second-tier] side Greenock Morton FC, this blog can exclusively reveal.

Cham put pen to paper on a two-year contract with The Pride of the Clyde after leaving Belgian Jupiler Pro League side KV Mechelen in search of first team football.

The 20-year-old was eying big for last season as he looked to break into the Mechelen first team after notching in ten goals for the club’s U-19s but his scoring qualities were overlooked by Mechelen coach Harm van Veldhoven, which prompted the 6ft 2in to quit the Belgian club.

His fine scoring form earned him a call-up with the 2011 Gambia U-20 side where he debuted in the CAF U-20 championship staged in South Africa as Gambia finished miserably in the group. It was the Belgian-born first African international outing but an injury limited him to a single appearance against Nigeria.

Greenock Morton coach Allan Moore said he hopes the Gambian is the missing piece of his Morton strike force after agreeing a deal for the giant forward as his capture will see him bolster his Ton squad once again this summer as he gears up for a Scottish Premiership promotion this season.

“We are happy bringing Cham over as he has shown up well in the [trial] games but we have taken a gamble on him,” Moore said.

“We watched him for 45 minutes against Motherwell and he scored two goals and impressed us. He is a big, strong centre-forward and there are not many of them in Scotland just now.”

“Andy Barrowman was the only one that was available but Cham is at the right age, he is hungry to improve. Barrowman is a really good striker but we thought we would be better going with the younger boy,” the Greenock Morton boss stated.
