Bonu Johnson takes over Scorpions top job, Mancini relegated

Peter Bonu Johnson
Just four days before facing Ivory Coast in a crucial 2014 World Cup qualifier, the Gambia has announced a change in the Scorpions’ coaching setup with Peter Bonu Johnson taking over from the man he lost the position to – Italian Luciano Mancini.

The Ministry of Youth and Sports says they in consultation with the football authorities have decided to put Bonu Johnson back in charge of the Gambian national team, the Scorpions.

This follows Bonu’s recent success at the Umbria International Tournament in Italy where he steered an Under-19 Gambian side to cup victory.

The Ministry of Youth and Sports, which appoints and pays the country’s national team coaches, confirmed to this blog that Peter Bonu Johnson has been reinstated as head coach of the Scorpions and the man for whom he was made to stand aside exactly a year ago, Luciano Mancini, is now to serve under him as an adviser.

Exactly a year to the month, Mancini was brought in and placed above Bonu in the coaching order. But after three high profile games without a point – Tanzania in the World Cup qualifiers, Algeria in the Nations Cup qualifiers and Ivory Coast in the World Cup qualifiers – the Ministry of Youth and Sports decided to put Bonu back in charge for the remainder of the Scorpions’ World Cup games.

The former national player will now steer the Gambia for the remaining 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Tanzania, Morocco and first this weekend, Ivory Coast.
