Papa Gassama will know later this week whether he was Africa’s top referee in
2013.
The 34-year-old FIFA match official from the Gambia’s North
Bank village of Meme has been shortlisted for CAF’s Referee of the Year award
along with two others – Cameroonian Alioum Néant and Algerian Djamel Haimoudi,
who won the award in 2012.
In 2013, Papa Gassama was appointed to officiate in most of
the high-profile football events in Africa, including the Africa Cup of Nations,
the CAF Super Cup, the Africa Zone World Cup qualifiers and the CAF Champions
League final.
He also took charge of big matches in World football,
including the FIFA Under-20 Finals in Turkey and the FIFA Club World Cup in
Morocco, where he became the first man to use the so-called ‘vanishing spray’
to mark where the ball and wall should be positioned for free kicks.
No Gambian has ever been nominated much less named as CAF
Referee of the Year. But Papa Gassama’s sights in 2014 are not just on winning
the prestigious CAF Award, which will be handed out in Lagos, Nigeria, this Thursday,
as his ambition is to play in the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
