Kuopion Palloseura trial Yankuba Ceesay

Yankuba 'Mal' Ceesay (R) and compatriot Omar Colley (L)
Gambia midfielder Yankuba ‘Mal’ Ceesay is currently undergoing trial with Finnish Veikkausliiga club Kuopion Palloseura (KuPS), this blog can exclusively reveal.

The 29-year-old Gambia international became a free player after his two-year contract with Estonian Meistriliiga side JK Nõmme Kalju came to an end at the end of last season.

Ceesay arrived in Kuopio last Thursday and is set to spend a week with the Veikkausliiga club with a view to earning a deal.

Mal Ceesay joined KuPS on trial after one of the club’s midfielders was ruled out for six to nine months with an injury sustained during a 2-2 friendly match draw with FC Honka in which Ceesay’s compatriot, Omar Colley, scored.

This blog understands that KuPS’ head coach Esa Pekonen so far likes the performances of the 6ft 0in midfielder and should he be offered a deal, he will be the third Gambian to play for the Savon Sanomat Areena club after Omar Colley [currently on a two-year contract] and Dawda Bah.

Ceesay started his footballing career with Gambia Football Federation First Division side Wallidan FC in 2004 before moving to Peru to play for Club Alianza Atlético Sullana where he became the first Gambian to play professional football in Latin America.

Mal spent a year at the Peruvian club before having a brief trial with English League One side Walsall FC but was unsuccessful to land himself a deal. In 2008, it was announced that he has joined Swedish Superettan [second tier] side Degerfors IF. He had his first cap for the Gambia national football team in a match against Senegal.

He won his first trophy since turning professional with JK Nõmme Kalju who claimed their maiden Estonian title in the 2012 season.
