Real de Banjul |
FUS de Rabat left it late to secure a 1-0 home victory over Champions
Real de Banjul as the qualifiers kicked off on Friday.
It was never going to be easy for the travelling Real team
against Jamal Sellami’s side, but the GFA league defending champions stood
their own ground until the 94th minute when they had to concede a very soft
penalty.
Striker Mourad Batna converted the penalty four minutes into
stoppage time to give the 2011/12 Moroccan Botola Pro runners-up and 2010
Orange CAF Confederation Cup winners a slender lead over the City Boys at the Prince
Moulay Abdellah Stadium.
Head Coach Alagie Sarr’s men can look forward to the return
leg to be played at the Brikama Box Bar mini stadium in two week’s time.
The three qualifying rounds began on February 15 and will end
on May 5 with the eight second round winners advancing to the group phase and
the losers to the play-offs in the second-tier CAF Confederation Cup.
Qualification ties of the Champions league are decided over
two legs, with aggregate goals used to determine the winner. If the sides are
level on aggregate after the second leg, the away goals rule is applied, and if
still level, the tie proceeds directly to a penalty shootout (no extra time is
played).
The team that makes it past this stage will meet either
Union Sportive de Douala of Cameroon or Liberia Ship Corporate Registry FC in
the first round of the qualifiers.
