Real de Banjul begins Champions League adventure tonight

Real de Banjul at Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium,
Gambian champions Real de Banjul will tonight take on 2011/12 Moroccan Botola Pro runners-up Fath Union Sport de Rabat at the 52,000 capacity Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.

Real de Banjul left the country for Morocco on Wednesday morning for the first leg tie of the preliminary round schedule for Friday 15th with the match set to kick-off at 19:00 GMT.

This will be Real’s third appearance in the CAF Champions League qualifiers with their last appearance coming in 2001 when they exited in the first round. FUS de Rabat on the other hand, has never participated in the Champions League qualifiers and this will thus be their first appearance in the competition.

They have meanwhile participated twice in the CAF Confederation Cup and were the winners of the competition in 2010 where they edged Tunisian club CS Sfaxien 3-2 on aggregate.

Qualification ties of the Champions league are decided over two legs, with aggregate goals used to determine the winner. If the sides are level on aggregate after the second leg, the away goals rule is applied, and if still level, the tie proceeds directly to a penalty shootout (no extra time is played).

The team that makes it past this stage will meet either Union Sportive de Douala of Cameroon or Liberia Ship Corporate Registry FC in the first round of the qualifiers.
