Sawaneh opens 2013 account by netting goal number seventeen

Striker Ibou Sawaneh
Gambia international striker Ibou Sawaneh opened his 2013 scoring account over the weekend in OH Leuven’s 1-1 draw at home against Beerschot AC.

These two sides who had both been lacking a bit of form lately and firepower met at the Stadion Den Dreef in Heverlee.

The home side, Leuven, were hoping to keep the pace up towards the top and contend for a UEFA Europa League Play-off spot while Beerschot were stuck third from bottom on the table.

Leuven began brighter and could’ve taken the lead in the fourteenth minute, but for a fingertip save from Stijn Stijnen – who was later sent off.

They had a bit more luck four minutes after the break with Sawaneh striking a well perfectly-taken free kick.

The Heverlee-based side let the lead slipped off their grip as Beerschot came from behind to equalise in the 78th minute through Benito Raman.

The Gambian is now level on goals with DR Congo and Anderlecht striker Dieumerci Mbokani on 17, one behind Colombian Carlos Arturo Bacca of Club Brugge.
